Monitors

Computer monitors or displays come in all sizes, shapes and work in several ways. An older monitor is the CRT (big and heavy with a glass screen) that has either a curved or flat screen. They are cheap, sturdy and reliable, having been proved over many years. They are still probably the best for many types of graphics (especially the flat screen) and most computer games.

The downside of the CRT monitor includes higher power consumption, generates more heat, harder on the eyes over longer periods of time (especially in lighted areas), and it gives off radiation that may be harmful (to women especially).

The monitor may be part of the package that comes with your system, along with the mouse, keyboard, speakers and other peripherals

The monitor for you

More modern monitors include the flat panel, flat screen, lcd monitor, TFT screen, hdtv, and plasma screen. All can be in standard sizes or widescreen with advantages for both according to function. Many computers can have more than one lcd monitor attached at the same time, which may be useful in many business and gaming situations.

Selecting the best monitor for your situation really requires a bit of homework. For most of us the standard LCD monitor that comes with the computer when we buy it is generally more than adequate. However if you are using your computer for special tasks or for entertainment purposes then you should look more carefully. You must consider factors like the screen size, numbers of pixels in both directions, dead cell limits, refresh rate and how wide the visible angles are.

Prices also vary considerably so choose your ideal monitor, a couple of acceptable alternatives and then do the homework on the web, in advertisers pamphlets, in the media, and by visiting stores. When you get the one you are most happy with, at the right price, you have succeeded in getting a real bargain.
